The project focuses on the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, which represent radiative forcing peaking at 4.5 W/m2 (RCP4.5) and 8.5W/m2 (RCP8.5), respectively, by 2100. While RCP 4.5 is a scenario that stabilizes radiative forcing at 4.5 Watts per square meter in 2100, the RCP8.5 scenario corresponds to the path with the highest greenhouse gas emissions. RCP4.5 expects a global temperature increase of 3ºC, assuming that societies reduce emissions rapidly but not rapidly enough to keep warming below 2ºC. On the other hand, RCP8.5 corresponds to the worst-case scenario, assuming that societies do not make coordinated efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is important to use the worst case results to analyze the impacts on a wider range of outcomes.
Co-applicant Istanbul Technical University (ITU) will be responsible for WP1. The WP1 team will consist of three researchers, one senior and two early stage. Convection Permitting Climate simulations (CPM) for each area will be run in a parallel processing environment to complete the project within 18 months. Therefore, the ITU high-performance computing center will be used for computer hours for the service.
