Özet:

The objective of this thesis is to study the internal erosion phenomenon taking place in earth dams and earth embankments.

For this purpose, eight different soils are studied from seven different dam sites in Turkey. A pinhole test apparatus is manufactured and all soils are subjected to testing. In addition, the dispersion characteristics of soils are also examined by Soil Conservation Service dispersion (double hydrometer) test, chemical tests and crumb test.

Soils are subjected to certain standard tests to obtain their index properties and mineralogical characteristics, for their identification.

The results show that seven of the eight soils tested here can be classified as non-dispersive, and one is in transition zone. Dispersion piping behavior studied in soils is compared with their other soil properties in order to  search for certain correlations. Such comparisons have shown   that soils with swelling type clay minerals are less  susceptible to dispersion piping. There is not any other  significant relationship between the index properties and   dispersibility for the soils studied here.

Pinhole test and chemical tests can be considered more   effective in determining dispersibility according to the   results obtained here, therefore, it is suggested to perform   at least those two tests in studying dispersion piping  phenomenon in soils.
