Abstract
Ivan Illich’s theoretical framework is based on the industrialization of modern healthcare and the argument that this process deepens health inequalities. Global pandemics, such as COVID-19, have validated Illich's perspective by clearly exposing the inequalities in access to healthcare. This study aims to re-evaluate the injustices created by global pandemics in healthcare systems from Ivan Illich’s critical perspective. According to Illich, the commercialization of modern healthcare transforms health needs into a profit-driven industry, neglecting genuine health requirements and limiting access to healthcare services. Using Illich’s theoretical framework, this study analyzes the effects of global pandemics on health policies and discusses the necessary steps toward a more equitable healthcare system. In this context, the study explores how we can align Illich’s perspective with contemporary health policies and what actions we can take to move towards a more just health future.
