Özet

Introduction: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterized by physical and psychological symptoms that negatively affect daily functioning (1). Most of the women experience premenstrual syndrome negatively (2).  Aim: This study was carried out to determine the effect of a psychoeducation program based on cognitive behavioral and psychodrama techniques on premenstrual syndrome symptoms. Material and Methods:In this study, 32 students with premenstrual syndrome studying at a university located in the northwest of TÜRKİYE were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The student in the experimental group was included in the psychoeducation program based on cognitive behavioral and psychodrama techniques for seven sessions. The students in the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were collected using an information form, Premenstrual Symptoms Impact SurveyTR, and Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (3,4). Results: The premenstrual disorders experienced by the students participating in the study before the psychoeducation were at a level that affected their functional health and well-being. Premenstrual Symptoms Impact Survey and Premenstrual Syndrome Scale scores and depressive affect, fatigue, irritability, depressive thoughts, appetite, and sleep changes scores of the students participating in the experimental group in the study decreased significantly in the posttest measurements (p<.05). Moreover, the experimental group had a significantly lower median posttest “anxiety” score than the control group (p=.021). Discussion and Conclusion: A psychoeducation program based on cognitive behavioral and psychodrama techniques applied for premenstrual syndrome can be used as an effective therapeutic intervention in increasing individuals' functional health and well-being and reducing premenstrual syndrome symptoms.
