Correlation of seismic testing and reconnaissance data for thermoplastic pipelines: Axial tension

Özet
This study investigates the axial performance of polyvinyl chloride pipelines through a series of laboratory experiments and field data correlations. The test specimens were subjected to both external and internal loading conditions to evaluate the axial performance of various pipe joints under large deformations. The test results showed that axial strain capacity and force response were strongly influenced by the loading type (tension or compression) as well as the type of connection. In addition to the experimental testing program, empirical repair relationships were developed for PVC pipelines by correlating axial strain limits with repair data from the Christchurch earthquake, which occurred near the city center. While laboratory tests measured higher axial strains before failure, field observations from the Christchurch earthquake showed that PVC pipes were damaged at much lower strains. The integration of laboratory testing with field observations provides new insights into pipeline axial performance and failure mechanisms under permanent ground deformations (PGD).
