Abstract

Jaw-opening muscles showed their highest twitch tension when the mouth was fully closed whereas in the jaw-closing muscles this occurred when the mouth was opened almost as wide as possible. All jaw muscles were of the fast-twitch type. The special length-tension relationship of the jaw-closing muscles may help protect the teeth and periodontium from damaging force during tooth contact. © 1978.
