INTERNATIONAL LEARNERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF TURKISH INSTRUCTORS
Abstract
In the globalized world, the activities of teaching Turkish as a foreign language continue increasingly in Turkey and in the world. There are some variables affecting the quality of them, which can be categorized as the instructor, material, learning environment and assessment and evaluation. Among these, the instructor differs in that it affects the others. There are some research studies on qualifications of the instructors in the literature. In this study, the perceptions towards the instructors were tried to be revealed based on the learners’ views. To this end, phenomenography, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. Research data were collected from 15 volunteer learners in Turkish teaching centers affiliated to various universities in Istanbul through a semi-structured interview form and analyzed with content analysis. The findings reveal that international learners perceive Turkish instructors as the ones who value learner-teacher interaction and reinforce what is learned in the classroom and turn it into practice outside the classroom.
Key Words: Turkish education, teaching Turkish as a foreign language, international learners, instructor, perception.
