Özet
Participatory design is framed as a democratic approach enabling users to participate in shaping design problems. In sustainability-oriented contexts, however, problems are not immediately recognized, and needs may remain latent. Topic-related attitudes may therefore influence not only engagement but also framing of design problems. While prior research has examined motivation within predesigned frameworks, less attention has been given to attitude variation and co-design in environmental initiatives. This study explores how topic-related attitudes relate to problem framing and how ideation methods interact with these orientations. A workshop series was conducted within a biodiversity awareness project across two universities in Türkiye and Japan. Findings revealed differing epistemic framings of the same environmental design problem around anthropocentric-ecological tensions, and that participation does not inherently decenter anthropocentric priorities. The study demonstrates that prior attitudes are associated with these framings, and identifies key implications for structuring sustainability-oriented participatory design practices that better support ecological-relational framings.
