Problem Status: The
inclusion of storytelling activities in the learning process of children as a
pedagogical tool that stimulates their imagination is of great importance for
their development. Storytelling is a unique experience, a collective
construction, that takes place in the mind of the listener through the
interaction of the narrator and the listener.
Through fairy tales, preschool teachers can expand the imagination in
the child, increase learning, improve listening skills, instill values, develop
tolerance to cultural differences, improve memory and vocabulary. Based on
these considerations, this research focuses on storytelling in preschool and
examines the effect of fairy tales on children according to teachers’ opinions.
Method: This study is qualitative
research, and face-to-face interview technique was used. The study group
consists of 7 volunteer preschool teachers, 5 of whom received training in
storytelling, actively working in different districts of Istanbul. The data
obtained was reviewed with the content analysis.
Findings and Conclusion: Research
findings are grouped under six themes: the definition of the fairy tale, its
effect on students, fairy tales in the teaching of the mother tongue, the
points that parents should pay attention to in the selection of fairy tale
books and storytelling, and the contribution of fairy tales to child
development. Accordingly; 1) The participants described the fairy tale as a key
that visualizes imaginary and extraordinary events that our eyes do not see. 2)
The participants explain the impressive aspects of the fairy tale on the child
with imaginary characters, supernatural and magical events. 3) Drama, visual
materials, a clear and simple narrative language and the use of metaphorical
concepts can be considered as the facilitating effect of the fairy tale in the
student's mother tongue learning, according to the participants. 4) The
participants stated that the points that parents should pay attention to when
choosing fairy tale books for children are content, age and developmental
suitability, font size, and language of expression. 5) The participants
emphasized the points that parents should pay attention to when telling fairy
tales to children as follows; Telling the fairy tale interactively, telling it
before going to bed at night, being aware that the fairy tale has an important
place in the development of children and that it plays an important mediator in
spending quality time with the child, and that it is effective in vocabulary
and language development. 6) Participants also associated the contribution of
the fairy tale to child development with the concepts of creativity,
linguistic-mental development, multidimensional evaluation, listening skills
and vocabulary. Especially in schools affiliated to the Ministry of National
Education, supporting storytelling with empowerment trainings for both parents
and teachers can be beneficial for the holistic development of children.
