Özet

This study comparatively examines passive and active smart glass systems through the application- and performance-oriented parameters required by professional users such as architects, engineers, and practitioners who act as decision-makers in glass selection. The analysis jointly addresses energy efficiency, light transmittance, thermal comfort, transparency control, transition time, durability and service life, maintenance, UV resistance, application areas, and the systems' advantages and disadvantages. These parameters were determined through a systematic review of scientific studies and technical data sheets published between 2010 and 2024. The review shows that the literature predominantly focuses on materials science and energy-oriented outputs, whereas application-scale parameters such as transition time, durability, and maintenance are addressed in a limited and fragmented way in comparative studies. Accordingly, the study presents the performance advantages and limitations of passive and active glazing systems within a multi-criteria structure and, rather than directing users toward a single solution, supports evaluations suited to their project priorities. The findings show that passive systems stand out with low operational costs, long service life, and ease of maintenance, while active systems offer instantaneous control, dynamic optimization, and high adaptability. The study thus provides a multi-criteria decision support framework that supports glazing selection systematically and transparently.
