Abstract

The Sewage System Pump Station in Bayrakli, Izmir required a 21 meter deep excavation in an urban area. Soft alluvium layers overlying a steep diving andesite bed-rock and a high ground water table required a careful implementation of diaphragm wall, prestressed anchor, minipile, and grouting schemes to obtain a stable and dry excavation pit. The temporary cut-off wall was completed on schedule, and within a tight budget despite all unfavorable parameters. The design and construction works are described in the following paragraphs to provide information to designers and contractors of deep urban excavations below water level.
