Abstract
Business
processes, methods, work practices, and employee roles are constantly changing
and transforming with digitalization. Undoubtedly, these transformations affect
all employees both positively and negatively. However, this study focuses
specifically on female employees. Gender-based roles, expectations, belief
systems, and related socio-cultural dynamics differentiate the workplace
experiences of women and men. From this perspective, the study aims to examine
the experiences, needs, opportunities, and organizational barriers faced by
female employees in the age of digitalization within a holistic framework.
This
study adopts the Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) methodology to review
literature published between 2019 and 2025. The review process is designed in
accordance with the structured framework of REA. Gender equality forms the
theoretical basis of the study. The focus on the post-2019 period is justified
by the acceleration of digital transformation triggered by the COVID-19
pandemic, the expansion of remote and hybrid work models, increased digital
dependence, rising technostress, workload restructuring, and the increasing
importance of digital skills. This study aims to address four research
questions: RQ1: What opportunities does digital transformation create for women
employees? RQ2: What are the most common organizational risks associated with
digital transformation for women employees (e.g., stress, workload
intensification, emotional labor, job insecurity)? RQ3: What structural or
organizational barriers do women employees face in digital transformation
processes? RQ4: What strategies have been proposed to reduce or eliminate the
barriers faced by women employees in this context?.Inclusion criteria covered
only peer-reviewed research articles focusing on women employees, published in
English, and explicitly related to SDG 5 (Gender Equality). These studies were
identified through a systematic search in the Web of Science and Scopus
databases. The selection process was carried out in two stages: First, titles
and abstracts were reviewed for suitability, and duplicate entries were removed
using Zotero software. PRISMA 2020 guidelines were applied throughout the
review process, and the final selection was made from 24 studies. The included
studies were examined using thematic analysis, ensuring a comprehensive
identification of dominant patterns, emerging trends, and research gaps in the
literature.
The
originality of this study lies in its synthesis of digital transformation
research from a gender equality perspective, offering a rapid, systematic, and
thematically integrated assessment of the contemporary literature. In this way,
the study aims to inform future research agendas and provide evidence-based
information for policymakers who want to effectively address and capitalize on
the organizational barriers faced by women employees in digital transformation
processes.
