Abstract
Artificial
intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming health professions education,
creating new opportunities to develop a competent, adaptable, and resilient
healthcare workforce. However, the integration of AI into education should
extend beyond technological innovation and focus on its contribution to
sustainable healthcare and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This paper
proposes an interdisciplinary framework connecting AI-powered learning with
sustainable health workforce development. The framework integrates personalized
and adaptive learning, AI-assisted clinical reasoning, virtual simulation,
competency-based assessment, and continuous feedback to enhance the preparation
of future healthcare professionals. AI-enabled educational approaches can
potentially provide individualized learning pathways, facilitate clinical
decision-making practice, identify learning gaps, and expand access to
high-quality educational resources. These capabilities may strengthen
educational quality while supporting the development of a digitally competent
and resilient healthcare workforce. The proposed framework primarily
contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality
Education), while also supporting SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and
Infrastructure) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Nevertheless, responsible
implementation requires attention to ethical governance, data privacy,
algorithmic bias, digital inequality, academic integrity, and appropriate human
oversight. The paper argues that AI should augment rather than replace
educators and clinical learning experiences. By connecting educational
innovation with workforce sustainability, the proposed framework provides a
pathway for integrating AI into health professions education while maintaining
human-centered principles. Future empirical research should evaluate its
effectiveness in improving clinical reasoning, competency development, learner
engagement, and preparedness for sustainable healthcare systems.
