Abstract
Recent measurements of both solid-solid and solid-liquid surface energies in the Al-CuAl2 system have allowed a test of classical heterogeneous nucleation theory to be made. The nucleation rate of CuAl2 on an Al substrate has been calculated; the calculated nucleation rate per droplet does not agree with experimental measurements. It appears that the present model of heterogeneous nucleation can only be used if non-physical surface energies are used. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
