Abstract

The agriculture sector is increasingly adopting digital tools to boost efficiency and sustainability. E-agriculture systems, which merge information and communication technologies with agricultural practices, are becoming crucial for modern farming. However, creating commercial e-agriculture applications presents challenges in terms of reliability, scalability, and maintainability. This study examines the use of formal methods (FM) in developing e-agriculture systems, focusing on the object constraint language (OCL) as a modeling tool. The study provides a case study of developing an e-agriculture system using OCL, showing how FM can improve the development process and result in more reliable and maintainable software. FM offer advantages not only for safety-critical systems but also for commercial and business-focused applications, as they can significantly reduce verification, development time, and maintenance costs. OCL-based software requirements specifications (SRS) have been compared with traditional methods (TRs) of specifications, OCL-based SRS significantly reduced 36 days development time, 47% overall cost, and 92% SRS ambiguity. It improved 97% quality of the system. These findings motivate the use of FM.
