The Role of Job Meaningfulness in Mediating the Relationship Between Perceived Workload and Job Stress Among Healthcare Workers

Abstract

This study is designed to examine how employees perceive their workload, how it affects their job stress, and the mediating role of job meaningfulness in this relationship. A high perception of workload generally exposes employees to high levels of job stress. Employees working under an intense workload often face stress due to the inability to meet deadlines, the challenge of completing multiple tasks within limited timeframes, the inability to produce quality work outcomes, and the negative impacts of workload on work-life balance. This stress can lead to burnout, fatigue, anxiety, and even detachment from the organization among employees. The concept of job meaningfulness, on the other hand, is considered a factor that enhances employees' motivation and job satisfaction. This study is specifically designed to investigate the mediating role of job meaningfulness in the relationship between perceived workload and job stress among healthcare workers. Literature reviews suggest that while workload increases stress levels, the meaningfulness of the job can mitigate this effect. In this context, making the job meaningful has been shown to increase employees' capacity to cope with stress. Therefore, the literature review highlights that developing stress management strategies in the workplace could provide valuable insights into enhancing job meaningfulness.
